Solvita holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Latvia. She has since worked on several individual research projects about the language policies, managements, and practices in the Baltic States and about interactive teaching approaches for less commonly taught languages (especially Latvian). She taught Latvian and Latvian Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle for four academic years. In 2020, she published a methodology book and a textbook (in Latvian), both concerning how to include authentic texts in the language-learning process. She joined the IU Summer Language Workshop in 2019, and has taught an intensive Latvian-language course there every summer since.
