WORKSHOP COVID-19 UPDATES BY DATE
As of this writing, the Workshop is operating on the assumption that in-person instructor, on-campus housing, and overseas travel will all be possible in summer 2021. We understand that things may change between now and then, and have put contingency plans in place. We anticipate letting students know in March/April if contingencies need to be activated.
If travel to Taiwan is impossible, Project GO Taiwan will be conducted online as a virtual study-abroad program.
If travel to Zagreb is impossible, the online+overseas BCS programs will be conducted fully online.
If travel to Samarkand is impossible, the online+overseas Uzbek program will be conducted fully online.
If on-campus housing is impossible
the Arabic, Chinese, and Russian immersion programs will be conducted online, with modified immersion components.
all other programs will cease offering housing.

The Workshop has updated the summer 2020 Student Handbook to reflect details of the online programs.
Indiana University has cancelled all summer 2020 on-campus programs.
To help students continue their studies during under these unprecedented circumstances, the Workshop will offer its programs online this summer.
We are working with faculty and university administration to work out the details of the transition. We will post them in the FAQ section of this page as they become available, and will announce them on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
We are contacting each accepted and waitlisted student by e-mail to discuss their individual situation. If you do not receive your e-mail by March 30, please contact us at languageworkshop@indiana.edu .
The staff and faculty of the Workshop share your disappointment about this news, and we thank you for your patience as we work out the logistics of moving the program to its new format.
Indiana University has canceled all summer 2020 overseas programs.
This affects the following Workshop programs:
Chinese in Kaohsiung & Project GO Taiwan Scholarships
All overseas Title VIII Fellowships
BCS in Zagreb
Uzbek in Samarkand
Workshop staff are working with affected students to arrange alternative programming. If you are signed up for one of these programs and have not received an e-mail notification, please contact us at languageworkshop@indiana.edu .
Although we are putting contingency plans in place, Workshop staff continue to operate on the assumption that restrictions will be lifted in time for the 2020 Workshop.
As of this update, no Workshop programs have been canceled. Preparation for programs is moving forward as planned.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We hope so! The Workshop is working with instructors to ensure that as many Workshop courses as possible remain available in the online format. That said, circumstances may affect our ability to offer individual sections of individual courses. Should it become necessary to cancel a course, we will notify the students of that course and refund any IU fees associated with attending the course.
We will keep students updated as we move forward with the transition and will provide students as much notice as possible when circumstances change.

Yes. To accomodate students in multiple time zones, courses will run 12:00 to 2:00 PM and 3:30 to 5:30 PM Eastern.
Yes. Online courses will cover the same content and have the same proficiency goals as the original face-to-face courses.
No. Eight-week courses will still deliver 160 hours of instruction; nine-week courses, 180 hours of instruction.
Yes, each online course offers the same credit as the originally scheduled face-to-face course.
Yes, but in a good way. Your tuition will remain the same, but your academic fees will decrease. Consult the page for your course for updated cost estimates. (Go to LANGUAGES, find your language and your course, then scroll down for costs.)
We are working with the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies and with the BALSSI Consortium to determine whether BALSSI 2020 will be impacted by the change to online instruction. We will notify all BALSSI students of any changes to their summer courses. Please contact languageworkshop@indiana.edu if you have questions.
No. If you have a Hamilton Lugar School Language Workshop Scholarship, it will remain unchanged. Contact languageworkshop@indiana.edu if you have questions.
It may. The amount of your scholarship will be adjusted to reflect the difference between the face-to-face fees and the online fees. Your scholarship will continue to cover the same percentage of tuition and fees, but the actual dollar amount may change. Contact languageworkshop@indiana.edu if you have questions.
It may. We are working with the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies to clarify the status of AABS funding for students in online courses. We will update AABS scholarship holders as details are finalized.
It may. Title VIII Fellowships will continue to cover tuition & fees and to provide a housing & meals stipend, but the actual dollar amount of each Fellowship may change in response to differences between face-to-face and online fees. The Workshop will contact each Title VIII Fellow individually to discuss their award.
The disposition of Project GO Scholarships will be decided by Project GO National. Indiana University is operating on the assumption that Project GO Scholarships will continue to provide tuition, fees, transfer of credit fees, and testing fees. Room, meals, and travel, however, will no longer be covered.
We will delay billing Project GO students for academic fees or tuition until Project GO Scholarships are officially approved for online courses.
The Workshop encourages students to move forward with their Project GO plans so that they are ready to go when scholarships are approved. In the event that they are not, students will be able to withdraw with no penalty.
The Language Workshop does not manage FLAS awards.

If you have received FLAS funding from another institution, contact that instutition's FLAS coordinator for guidance.
Yes, it will.
Immersion housing is not feasible in the online format. Your instructors will work with you to offer online alternative interaction opportunities, but a true immersion will not be possible.
Tutoring will continue as scheduled. You will work with tutors daily in small groups or one-on-one as you would have in the face-to-face course.
The Workshop will provide online events, including guest speakers, networking events, and out of class exhibits. Individual instructors are arranging "live from" events where students interact with artists, political figures, business leaders, etc. from regions speaking the language of study, in an online format.
Details on the revised cultural programming schedule will be posted in your course Canvas site and on the Workshop events calendar in late April.
To participate in the course, you need:
reliable internet access with no data limit or with data limits sufficient to permit at least 5 hours streaming access daily;
reliable headset or earbuds with microphone, wired or with at least 5 hours battery life;
a reliable computer, preferably with full-sized keyboard;
the ability to record and post video and audio;
optionally, a small whiteboard and thick-tip dry-erase markers for sharing quick written responses
