This intensive program provides beginners a solid introduction to Uzbek. Students who complete the course successfully will complete the equivalent of the 1st-Year curriculum in the Department of Central Eurasian Languages at Indiana University and will reach a proficiency of Intermediate Low or better.
The course combines 4 weeks of intensive online language study (equivalent to Uzbek 101) with 4 weeks of face-to-face immersion instruction in Samarkand (equivalent to Uzbek 102), with the same instructor teaching both the online and the overseas course. (Update: due to COVID-19, all 8 weeks are now online.)
Participants will acquire a familiarity with Uzbek culture by working with authentic materials and media during the online portion of the course, then through direct experience living and studying in Uzbekistan.
Students who finish the sequence successfully will be able to function effectively in an Uzbek-speaking environment. They will be able to understand and work with authentic materials, including news, videos, podcasts, chats, stories, articles on familiar topics, etc.
