This intensive program provides beginners a solid introduction to Ukrainian. Students who complete the course successfully will complete the equivalent of the 1st-Year curriculum at Indiana University and will reach a proficiency of Intermediate Low or better. They will be able to communicate in day-to-day situations in Ukrainian, will be able to read and write effectively on familiar topics, and will have a solid foundation for further study or travel. The program introduces Ukrainian culture through work with authentic materials and media, as well as Ukrainian activities and structured interactions with Ukrainian speakers.

HOUSING AND MEALS
Due to COVID-19, summer 2020 Workshop classes will not be residential. Classes will be offered online.
The description below reflects the regular structure of the Workshop, which we plan to return to in 2021.
Workshop students live in Willkie Center in air-conditioned single rooms, sharing a lounge with other students studying the same language.
On-campus dining options in the summer are limited. Indiana University Meal plans are available, but the number of cafeterias and hours of operation are limited. Most Workshop students prefer pay-as-you-go dining.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Born in Ukraine, Svitlana Melnyk received her PhD in Philology from the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. She specializes in sociolinguistics and bilingualism and her research interested include linguistic minorities and the intersection of bilingualism and language policies in Ukraine.
Dr. Melnyk is a certified ACTFL OPI Tester in Russian and in Ukrainian. In addition to Ukrainian language and Ukrainian culture courses, she 3rd-year Russian and Business Russian during the academic year. In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, spending time with family and entertaining friends with good food and conversation.
Dr. Melnyk has been teaching in the Language Workshop since 2015.
