The Language Workshop is pleased to welcome Dr. Aleksey Berg to the IU Bloomington family. Dr. Berg will be leading Russian 6 this summer.
Dr. Berg was born in St. Petersburg, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics. He has lived and worked in the United States for 15 years, teaching Russian at the University of South Carolina, Boston College, and Middlebury College. Holding a Ph.D. from Harvard University, he teaching full-time at the College of New Jersey. 2019 will be Dr. Berg’s first summer in Indiana and he is very excited about sharing the Bloomington experience with his students and his cat, Talya, who will be making the trip with him.
Dr. Berg’s will be teaching an intensive, immersive course designed to help students with advanced proficiency in Russian develop professional command of register, style, discourse and nuance.
The course is not a traditional grammar course, but is structured as a model seminar on contemporary Russian culture, where in addition to examining Russian cultural artifacts, students will hone their debating skills, their command of nuance, subtext, irony, innuendo, and persuasive academic discourse, and their academic writing skills in Russian.
Students who complete the course successfully will be able to engage appropriately and effectively in professional, academic, political, and informal situations. They will be able to interpret tone, rhetoric, and cultural references and to speak and write with ease, fluency, and precision.
We share Dr. Berg’s infectious enthusiasm about sharing this course with Workshop students. «Ждём Вас, Алексей Михайлович!»
